The Judiciary of Seychelles welcomed a new member to the legal profession on Tuesday 21 July, as Sunil Lafortune was formally called to the Bar during a ceremony held in Courtroom 1 of the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice.
The occasion was attended by members of the Judiciary, legal practitioners, as well as Mr. Lafortune’s family and friends, who gathered to celebrate this significant milestone in his legal career.
Mr. Lafortune holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of London and successfully completed his Bar Vocational Course in January 2024. He undertook his two-year pupillage at Basil Hoareau’s Law Chambers from April 2024 to April 2026, fulfilling the professional requirements for admission as an Attorney-at-Law in Seychelles.
During the ceremony, the Chief Justice commended Mr. Lafortune for his dedication and professionalism throughout his pupillage, noting that he consistently demonstrated a willingness to assist his pupil master, Mr. Basil Hoareau, whenever called upon. Judge Esparon also offered words of praise, recognising Mr. Lafortune’s commitment and promising future within the legal profession.
Speaking on behalf of his chambers, Mr. Basil Hoareau described Mr. Lafortune as a man of good character. Friends and colleagues also shared their congratulations, describing him as a diligent lawyer and expressing their enthusiasm for continuing to work alongside him in the years ahead.
In his closing remarks, the Chief Justice encouraged experienced members of the legal profession to take on pupil attorneys, emphasising the important role mentorship plays in developing the next generation of legal practitioners and strengthening the legal profession in Seychelles.
