Judge Alexandra Madeleine joined the Supreme Court in February 2023, and presides over both civil and criminal proceedings.

Judge Madeleine brings over a decade of well-rounded legal experience to the bench. She commenced her career in 2009 as a State Counsel in the chambers of the Attorney General, where she was successively promoted up to Assistant Principal State Counsel. During this time, she also served as an Assistant Official Notary and was seconded to the Legislative Drafting department, where she drafted numerous pieces of primary and secondary legislation. In 2016, she transitioned to the private bar as an Attorney-At-Law and Public Notary, and litigated across complex and diverse practice areas including Civil, Commercial, Constitutional and Criminal law. Judge Madeleine’s experience also encompasses her tenure over subordinate tribunals including the Family Tribunal, Employment Tribunal and the Rent Board.  Since 2016, she lecturers Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code for the Bar Vocational Course.

Judge Madeleine graduated from the University of Mauritius with the degree of Bachelor of Laws with Honours [LLB(HONS)] and she passed the Barristers’ Vocational Examinations of the Council of Legal Education in Mauritius.

She was awarded the degree of Master of Laws (Petroleum Law and Policy) with Distinction [LLM(Distinction)] by the University of Dundee, Scotland.

She was also awarded a Post Graduate Certificate of Proficiency in Legislative Drafting [PGCert]upon completion of the Commonwealth Legislative Drafting Course.
