The Chief Justice of Seychelles concluded his visit to Singapore last week 7-11 September 2026 with engagements focused on strengthening alternative dispute resolution and developing opportunities for legal cooperation.
As part of the visit, the Chief Justice, accompanied by the Director for Legal Affairs and representatives of the Seychelles Law Commission, visited the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC). The delegation met with SIMC Chairman Mr. George Lim SC, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Chuan Wee Meng and Counsel Ms Yap Pei Yin.
The discussions provided an opportunity to learn from Singapore’s experience in developing mediation as an effective and internationally recognised means of resolving disputes. The SIMC’s work is particularly relevant to Seychelles as the Judiciary continues to explore ways to implement the use of mediation and arbitration in a jurisdiction where disputes are often resolved through litigation.
Mediation can help parties resolve conflicts more efficiently, reduce the time and cost associated with court proceedings, preserve professional and commercial relationships, and ease pressure on the courts. Strengthening these mechanisms is therefore important to improving access to justice and supporting a more efficient and responsive justice system.
The delegation also met with representatives of the Singapore Academy of Law to exchange views on legal development, professional training, knowledge-sharing and opportunities for institutional collaboration.
These engagements form part of the Seychelles Judiciary’s continued efforts to learn from international best practices, strengthen regional and international partnerships, and develop a justice system that is modern, accessible and better equipped to meet the needs of the public, businesses and the wider economy.
