On a solemn occasion, the Supreme Court convened a ceremonial sitting on January 14, 2025, to honor the life and legacy of Mr. William Herminie, an esteemed attorney. Mr. Herminie, who passed away on December 9, 2024, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the legal profession and his enduring contributions to the socio-economic fabric of Seychelles.

Chief Justice Rony Govinden delivered a poignant tribute, highlighting Mr. Herminie’s remarkable journey. Called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 1988, Mr. Herminie’s career spanned decades of dedicated service. He began as a pupil in the Attorney General’s chambers, laying the foundation for a career marked by distinction and purpose. From serving as a cabinet barrister for 15 years to holding ministerial roles, including Minister for Employment and Social Services, his influence was profound.

Chief Justice Govinden noted that while Mr. Herminie faced challenges, including disciplinary proceedings, his rehabilitation and eventual reinstatement by the Court of Appeal underscored his resilience and unwavering commitment to justice. “For every life touched by his caring hand, for every voice uplifted under his guiding light, Mr. Herminie exemplified integrity and strength,” said the Chief Justice.

Tributes from the Legal Community The sitting featured heartfelt reflections from key members of the legal fraternity:

  • Justice Andre, Acting President of the Court of Appeal, commended Mr. Herminie for his diligence and commitment to justice, noting his efforts to overcome challenges with determination.
  • Judge Brassel Adeline credited Mr. Herminie as the inspiration behind his pursuit of legal studies, a testament to his mentorship and encouragement.
  • Judge Gustave Dodin highlighted Mr. Herminie’s passion for workers’ rights, recalling their collaborative efforts to amend the Employment Act to benefit the Seychellois workforce.
  • Attorney General Mr. Perrera emphasized the profound loss to the legal profession, urging colleagues to reflect on their roles and strive toward a just society.
  • Bar Association President Mr. Sabino shared a personal connection, recounting how Mr. Herminie presented him with his scholarship to study law overseas. He also shared a story of a time when someone in court tried to physically assault the presiding Judge – and Mr. Herminie took it upon himself to prevent further assault, going above the line of duty. He described him as a man of insight and wisdom, often engaging in meaningful deliberations on legal issues.

Mr. Herminie was remembered as a lawyer who championed socio-economic reform and community upliftment. His dedication to justice, integrity, and compassion has left an indelible mark on Seychelles. “In the annals of our nation, forever he’ll shine. In the hearts of the Seychellois, he holds a sacred place,” said Chief Justice Govinden.
